Red Rocket named preferred bidder on three solar projects in Bid Window 7
Government announced 890 MW of new solar capacity under Bid Window 7, with Red Rocket South Africa named preferred bidder on three of the four projects.
Recorded award facts
This is preferred bidder status, not a signed and financially closed contract. We record it as announced and we do not describe it as a concluded award.
On 15 December 2025 the Department of Electricity and Energy announced four new solar photovoltaic projects under Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, totalling 890 MW.
Red Rocket South Africa was named preferred bidder on three of the four projects. The fourth was awarded to Engie.
Government put total investment across all four projects at R16 billion. That figure covers the full window, not Red Rocket alone. No power purchase agreement term was stated in the government announcement, so we do not print one.
What bidders can take from it
Preferred bidder is a milestone, not a contract. The work between announcement and financial close decides whether the win survives.
Winning three of four in a single window is a capture result, not a writing result. It reflects site control, grid position and funding readiness assembled long before the window opened.
For anyone planning to bid a future window, the honest question is not whether you can write a strong response. It is whether your project will be ready to be evaluated when the window opens.
